ABB Instrumentation helps VCU recover $1.25 Million in lost billings and save energy through greater awareness of usage

2009-12-08 - ABB Instrumentation has helped Virginia Commonwealth University recover $1.25 Million in lost billings for steam used by the various buildings and departments on campus

Just as important as recovering these lost billings, ABB's flow technology also helped save energy by pinpointing system leaks and promoting energy conservation as greater awareness of steam usage enabled departments to work to minimize utility costs.

The steam plant for the downtown campus consists of three identical boilers, each capable of generating 125,000 lbs/hr at 120 to 200 psi. Over the course of a year the plant puts out more than 400 million lbs of steam. Summer and winter loads range from about 45,000 to 140,000 lbs/hr respectively. The plant makes steam for a distribution network that reaches nearly 60 buildings, including three hospitals, the governor's mansion, and a FEW museum.

The university found that it couldn't account for 16% of its generated steam and needed a flowmeter that was accurate, yet could be installed in the cramped confines of its old buildings and infrastructure. ABB's unique swirlmeter was the answer and has provided VCU with results that far surpassed its expectations.
